Atomic bombing of Nagasaki
Memoirs of a GeishaThe atomic bombing of Nagasaki enters Sayuri’s account not through a narrated attack but through its aftermath: Mameha’s maid, Ta-tsumi, was killed by the bomb. This brief recollection makes the event one part of a wider reckoning with how war scattered the people of Gion and rendered survival impossible to predict.
Place in the Wartime Narrative
Sayuri recounts Ta-tsumi’s death while reviewing, in the spring after the firebombing of Tokyo, the different fates of people she had known. The narration moves among deaths, survival, and displacement rather than describing the bombing itself. Nagasaki appears as one destination of wartime destruction, in contrast to the uncertain safety of those who had taken refuge elsewhere.
The Human Consequence
Ta-tsumi was Mameha’s maid, and the bombing killed her. The account gives no further circumstances of her death; its emphasis is on the fact of loss and on the relationship through which that loss becomes personally legible. Mameha herself survived the war while working as a nurse’s assistant in Fukui Prefecture, so the recollection sets her survival beside the death of someone close to her.
Survival and Chance
Sayuri places Ta-tsumi’s death among sharply divergent outcomes. Mr. Itchoda, Mameha’s dresser, died of a heart attack during an air-raid drill, while Mr. Bekku survived despite working at a naval base in Osaka. Pumpkin survived repeated bombings at the lens factory where she worked, and General Tottori also lived through the war. These contrasting fates lead Sayuri to recognize that wartime safety and danger did not follow a reliable measure of status or apparent security.
Narrative Significance
The bombing is presented as a remembered consequence rather than a staged scene: the narrative withholds the attack and names its human cost. That compression gives Ta-tsumi’s death its place in Sayuri’s larger reflection on the unpredictability of survival, in which the fortunes of people from Gion are altered by events beyond their control.
